Good girl
Good Girl at its core is an exploration of an undying craving and desire for approval, acknowledgement, and acceptance using childhood as an inspiration. This body of work reflects a process of learning self acceptance as we grow up - coming to an understanding that pleasing ourselves must outweigh pleasing others in order to find oneself and establish identity, independence, and autonomy. Ultimately, this work acts as a therapy in claiming my power. I utilize mostly everyday household items as props in self-portraits where I actively fight the learned behavior of conforming to social norms in favor of the sometimes strange and typically childish interests that I spent years trying to bury in order to be accepted. As I confront the viewer with my strange behavior, showcasing a body that does not meet typical beauty standards, I invite them to consider how they’ve changed themselves for the people around them.
